Tradition

Alfred Tabbert‘s demand “to give your best each and every day and make the caravans even more beautiful, safe and comfortable” still is one of our company‘s performance principles today. With a quantity of more than 250,000 produced caravans Tabbert as a premium manufacturer is one of the most experienced caravan producers.

Preserving values - shaping the future

For more than 40 years the Tabbert roof has been an unique product advantage of the Tabbert brand. With intensive development work and comprehensive tests our team has managed to further optimise this roof design. With approx. 5.8 cm the new roof is almost twice as thick as a comparable sandwich-pressed roof. This new thickness and the use of innovative materials further improve sound insulation and thermal insulation and optimise the roof‘s diffusion properties.

The creation of the legend of the Tabbert brand

From caravan pioneer to competence centre

  • Caravan pioneer Alfred Tabbert was born on 22 May 1908
  • He trained as a car body maker at Siemens automotive works in Berlin from 1923 to 1927.
  • In 1934 the master car body maker opened his first company in Schweinfurt – “Karrosseriebau Alfred Tabbert”.
  • Tabbert built his first caravans in 1937
  • On 17 August 1943, Alfred Tabbert’s business was destroyed by bombs – after being rebuilt the business was once again devastated by air raids on 14 October 1943. With his original business consisting of rubble and ash, on 24 February 1944 he moved his entire factory to Bad Kissingen.
  • In 1946 with a workforce of around 80 people, the business made around 12 hand and agricultural carts per day. Alfred Tabbert built what the market and people at the time desperately needed.
  • In 1948 high quality carts for agricultural were supplied from Bad Kissingen to the whole of Germany – with solid rubber tyres and wheels mounted on ball bearings. A wide range of products followed - from cars with single-axle trailers to the company’s own furniture products. Wood grain was painted artistically since there was no such thing as veneers at the time.
  • In mid-June 1948 a major fire triggered by a lightning strike destroyed the plant with the loss of all the stocks which had been built up with a great deal of care and effort.
  • After the currency reform, a new factory building was built with the company name “Fränkische Fahrzeug- und Möbelwerke” and a workforce of 120 people worked on the production of single-axle trailers and furniture.
  • 1953 finally brought the revolution - the first caravans that Alfred Tabbert built individually using oil-hardened hardboard were almost Spartan-like in their simplicity.
  • The first mass-produced caravans were built in Bad Kissingen in 1955/56. The “Ideal” had a single-wall design and weighed 240 kg. This caravan was designed for very small tow cars. The small Ideal (which provided the template for the current T@B) was 160 cm wide and cost around DM 3,000. The ivory synthetic resin paintwork provided protection from the weather. The van was decorated with polished aluminium strips. The first awning then following at the start of the sixties.
  • On 13 April 1959 the expansion of the business demanded that that company be put on a firmer legal footing, which led to the founding of Tabbert Wohnwagenbau GmbH.
  • On 3 December 1959 part of Hall 1 in Bad Kissingen fell victim to a fire after which Hall 2 was built the following year – production in Mottgers started at the same time.
  • 1961 saw the first CARAVAN SALON in Essen – and Alfred Tabbert was represented with his products at the event from its inception.
  • In 1962/63 Tabbert caravans started to feature the rear-vented roof and the “Tabbert nose” which remain a characteristic design feature today.
  • In 1964 Tabbert built a supply business for side components, floors and bottle crates. The “Don Alfredo” product range has increased to 14 models.
  • In 1965 the wave of popularity for caravans stretched from North Cape to Peloponnese. The Germans had caught the travel bug and a Tabbert caravan became a must-have item. Tabbert continued its success with models such as Kurfürst, Exzellenz, Comtesse SL, Regent de Luxe, Diplomat, Gouverneur and Premier, and continued to expand.
  • 1969 witnessed the 25,000th caravan rolling off the production belt at Mottgers. The modern production plant was extended piece by piece. New assembly areas followed together with the large furniture hall with painting booths.
  • In 1971 Tabbert was the leading caravan manufacturer in Germany.
  • In June 1971 during a press event, Tabbert demonstrated that a car and caravan combination were absolutely safe on the road when travelling at speeds of 100 km/h or more.
  • On 3 May 1972 the 50,000th Tabbert caravan (a Comtesse 445 TN) came off the assembly line
  • On 31 October 1973 Alfred Tabbert died on the factory site in Bad Kissingen as a result of a heart attack. Tabbert GmbH & Co. had been owned by Deutsche Castrol GmbH since 1 January 1972.
  • The 150,000th caravan came off the production line in March 1981.
  • In 1985 Dr Gerd Sannmann bought Tabbert Caravan GmbH
  • On 27 June 1986 the three FFB companies and CI Wilk Bad Kreuznach GmbH were acquired by Tabbert Caravan GmbH
  • 1987 saw the formation of TIAG Tabbert Industrie AG
  • 2001 – innovation prize
  • 2002 – Caravan of the Year 2002

25 February 2002

Nothing has changed about the principles and the philosophy of the company’s founder. In 2002 the 250th Tabbert caravan rolled off the production line. At today’s Tabbert competence centre our personnel are busy developing “caravanning for the future” - premium quality, innovation and design.
